I am hoping that Shelby will someday (and hopefully sooner than later) bring back the GT350 name and concept. It started going that way with the Shelby GT, but I am hoping (wishing?) they will go further.
I bought an '07 GT, white with grey interior, and had my dealer take the silver stripes off and replace them with a proper blue. I ended up sending the car to Shelby's mod shop, where they installed a 6-speed tranny with 3.73 gears. We also did a brake upgrade, swapped the wheels out, and put a Watts link in the back. Then there were some cosmetic touches to the interior and in the engine compartment.
I have long admired what Ken Miles did with the '65 GT350 and GT350R, and tried to follow that train of thought with my car by chopping weight wherever possible. When Shelby did the transmission swap (the mod shop crew is great, BTW), we used a lightweight driveshaft, and installed a lightweight Centerforce flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Engine now revs real nice and crisp, especially on downshifts and at higher rpm.
On the engine, I added power with Ford Racing heads and cams, an underdrive pulley and Bassani long tube headers. Dyno was just short of 340 at the rear wheels, and it is an absolute blast to drive.
So with the 2011 Mustang now getting the Coyote 5-liter engine and 6-speed tranny, I am hoping that Shelby will wave their magic wand and bring out a GT350 some time. White, blue stripes, more power, proper cosmetics, and hopefully a bit lighter in weight.
Here is to crossing the fingers that some day Carroll and Company will go back to where it all started for Shelby Mustangs...
